I live where the stack used to represent an important marker of a trail or fork in the road and act as a navigation device in a what is often a featureless landscape. I heard someone compare the random placement of these as a form of graffiti and I tend to agree. Far be it from me to want to forbid harmless activity but it can be confusing when you are in the middle of nowhere and people just randomly leave stacks.
It is altering the landscape and I guess we should be thoughtful before doing that. Yes…I fin them calming as well. Some are complaining that where they are used as trail markers it us causing confusion and getting people lost….
Love this post. There is something fun about finding stacked rocks in the middle of nowhere. Often hikers will use them as trail markers for trails that are not easily marked…like when you have to hike over rocks where a trail is not easily worn. Who knew stacking rocks could cause such debate?!? I love your first photo of the stacked rocks and I really enjoyed the article that followed with the rock stacking ! I was on a beach somewhere in the caribbean and there were all these stacks of rocks along the beach and rocky shore.
Some were is progress some so simple and others works of skilled hands. Upon inquiry, I was told that they were dreams or prayers, perhaps a memory, a tribute or a wish, a loving thought. They were pieces put together with care about a positive nature. If they should fall or become dislodged they had already fulfilled their purpose in that they were a start for a beginning of something good.
Just as the winds, water, time and gravity move the earth, so does the intangible essence of beings. I loved that and now I look for them and they bring me joy. My family and I have been stacking rocks each year for 20 years in Aruba for all the reasons you have describe.
